South Africa’s opposition lay 8 corruption charges against President Zuma

Following a report by South Africa's top corruption fighter which accused President Jacob Zuma of using public funds to upgrade of his private residence, the country’s leading opposition party has laid corruption charges against the president.

The Democratic Alliance laid eight corruption charges against alleging that state funds were used for a swimming pool, helipad and cattle enclosure, costing taxpayers about $23m (£13.8m).

The national spokesman for the Democratic Alliance (DA) said "we are laying charges because we want the president to be held personally liable."

"If we allow this president to continue today we are systematically allowing corruption to thrive in South Africa."
