President Jonathan summons Interior Minister and Immigration Boss

Following the terrible outcome of last Saturday's recruitment exercise organised by the Nigeria Immigration Service that resulted in stampedes that claimed many lives, the President today summoned the Interior Minister, Abba Moro and the Comptroller General of the NIS for explanation.

About 20 lives were reportedly lost in the exercise which many say was poorly planned. In reaction, the Nigerian Labour Congress staged a protest at the NIS office today. They were seeking for a probe into the incident and calling for the Minister's immediate resignation.

Later today, the Interior Minister in an interview with Channels Television expressed regret over the incident stating clearly that it was not a deliberate case of neglect by the government but rather an 'unforseen and unfortunate situation.'

Moro also disclosed that he had gone to the hospitals to see for himself. He noted that adequate arrangements had been made to assist those hospitalized and provide ambulance for those that lost their lives.

The National Human Rights Commission has also promised to investigate the incident.
