President Jonathan flags off construction of Second Niger Bridge

Almost fifty years after Nigeria's first President, Nnamdi Azikiwe commenced the construction of the first Niger Bridge, the 'second Azikiwe' today turned the sword for the construction of the Second Niger Bridge at the end of the Asaba/Onitsha highway.

The ceremony attracted many dignitaries and stakeholders including: Former Senate President, Ken Nnamani; Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu; Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Emeka Ihedioha; as well as the Governors of Delta, Anambra, Abia and Enugu states; Ministers and federal legislators.

President Jonathan stressed that the decision to commence the project later than expected was not with the 2015 elections in mind, but rather to ensure proper planning, funding and completion on schedule. 'We didn't want it to be another white elephant project...work will not stop until it is completed' he said. The President also noted that the project will 'alleviate the pains caused to travellers especially during festive periods'.

The Minister of Information, Mr. Labaran Maku disclosed that the project will be fully funded, and substantial funding will come from SURE-P. Also, the Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, noted that the 1590m long bridge will be funded by 60% equity and 40% debt. She said that quality investors have expressed interest in both.

Dr. Okonjo-Iweala lauded the President for starting the project. She noted that 'it will bridge communities, states, and our nation as one'. Praises for the president came from many including Governor Uduaghan of Delta State who said 'our wish is that four years later, you will come back to commission the bridge'.
