President Jonathan orders NNPC Probe

President Goodluck Jonathan has ordered a forensic probe into the account of the Nigeria National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC). This is coming weeks after suspended Central Bank Governor, Sanusi Lamido alleged that the oil corporation has failed to give account of a whooping $20 billion. Sanusi had also disclosed that NNPC has not been audited for five years.

This information was disclosed by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati on Wednesday. Abati told journalists at the state house the the presidency has engaged reputable international firms to carry out a forensic audit of the NNPC account.

With the high level of controversy and corruption that has engulfed the oil sector, the President may be looking to assure the international community of his administration’s readiness to fight corruption.
