In a referendum carried out today to decide the future of Crimea, the people voted to break away from Ukraine and join Russia. Over 95% of ballots were in favour of joining Russia.
Ukraine's government, as well as the European Union and the United States have rejected the vote describing it as illegal. President Barack Obama has told his Russian counterpart that the actions taken are in violation of Ukraine's sovereignty.
Putin has however said that the vote was in line with international law.
