UN condemns Crimea referendum

The United Nations General Assembly has approved a resolution branding the March 16 Crimean referendum that led to Russia’s annexation of Ukrainian peninsula as illegal. One hundred countries voted in favour of the resolution while eleven others voted against. There were 58 abstentions.

Russia has also been slammed with sanctions from the United States and European Union for the "illegal" take over of Crimea. President Barack Obama disclosed earlier that more severe sanctions could be imposed.

Meanwhile, both the International Monetary Fund and the United States have agreed to separate loan deals with Ukraine.
