Ugandan maid sentenced to 4 years in jail for assaulting toddler

Jolly Tumuhirwe, a Ugandan maid has been sentenced to four years behind bars after she was caught on camera assaulting a toddler, a case that was greeted with public outrage after the video was relesed online.

The 22-year old, was filmed beating, kicking and stamping an 18-month-old child belonging to her boss. She said the attack was revenge after she was beaten by the child's mother, an allegation denied by her boss.

According to the Chief Magistrate handling the case, Lillian Buchan, Tumuhirwe had committed an "unjustifiable and inexcusable" crime. It was therefore appropriate to punish her for the "ruthlessness exhibited" on an "innocent, helpless child"

The childs father, Mr Eric Kamanzi, installed a camera in his home after becoming suspicious. He had noticed earlier that his daughter was bruised and limping.

In reaction to the judgement, Ladislaus Rwakafuuzi, lawyer to the convicted maid, said the punishment is appropriate and so there will be no appeal. He noted that the court "spoke for many Ugandans."
