Nigeria Honours 100 Past and Current Heroes

As part of activities to mark Nigeria's centenary celebrations, some eminent individuals who worked tirelessly towards the unity and progress of the most populous black nation were today recognized in a grand ceremony. The Centenary Awards Ceremony/Dinner was held in the Federal Capital Territory, Abuja, and was attended by many Heads of State and Government (and their representatives).



The awards were given in various categories including: Politics, Academic and Sports among others. Awards were given to all former Presidents and Heads of State with most of them in this category awarded post-humously. Some of the other recipents include: Chief Emeka Anyoaku (former Secretary General of the Commonwealth), Chief Anthony Enahoro, Mallam Aminu Kano, Mrs Fumilayo Ransom Kuti, Margaret Ekpo.

Also on the list of award recipents were: the first indigenous Commander of the Nigerian Army and Airforce, first indigenous Inspector General of Police, Maj. Gen. Abdullahi Ahmed; first female pilot, Chinyere Kalu; Michael Akinkunmi (designer of the National Flag), Prof. Wole Soyinka (first Black Nobel Laureate), Prof. Chinua Achebe, John Pepper Clark and Cyprian Ekwensi.

Other categories
Heroes in Global Sports Competition: Madam Chioma H. (first Nigerian individual gold medalist in long jump), Nwankwo Kanu (most decorated footballer in Nigeria.

Accomplished Contemporary Entrepreneurs: Alhaji Aliko Dangote and Chief Mike Adenuga.

Distinguished Academic Scholars: Prof. Benjamin Oluwakayode, Prof. Chike Obi (most prolific Mathematician), Prof. Harrison (first Nigerian to get a BSc in Medicine)
