Breaking News: Sanusi Suspended!

African Conviction can confirm that President Goodluck Jonathan has suspended the Governor of Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Sanusi Lamido Sanusi for acts of financial misconduct.

The CBN Governor has been in the news in the last couple of months over the alleged missing funds. Sanusi last year wrote a letter to the President alleging that the NNPC had failed to remit large amounts of money to the federation account.

Mrs. Sarah Alade, the most senior Deputy Governor, is to take charge as Governor of the apex bank in acting capacity pending the appointment of a new Governor.

The Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Dr. Reuben Abati briefed journalists on the development. He disclosed that the decision to suspend the CBN Governor was based on the report of the Financial Reporting Council that indicted him on financial recklessness as well as breaches of enabling law and due process.

In an interview with Channels Television, Sanusi said the suspension did not come as a surprise. He dismissed the allegation of financial recklessness and threatened legal action insisting that the President lacked the power to suspend him without the backing of the Senate.

The House of Representatives in a rowdy session also passed a motion condemning the Sanusi's removal. Sanusi was appointed in June 2009 by Late President Yar'Adua to replace Professor Chukwuma Soludo as Governor the apex bank.
