President Goodluck Jonathan today in an address to mark Nigeria's centenary celebrations, stated that the joining together of the Northern and Southern Protectorates 100 years ago by Lord Lugard was not a mistake. He had words of praise for former leaders of the country who laboured to ensure the progress of Nigeria.
The President noted that despite the various challenges being witnessed, Nigeria remains a great nation and he will work tirelessly to ensure that Nigeria takes it's rightful place in the comity of nations. Quoting Nelson Mandela, the President said 'let us not judge ourselves wrongly, and let not he world judge us by how many times we have stumbled but by how strongly we have risen every single time that we have fallen'.
Jonathan stated that he was proud to usher the country into its second century. He reiterated that the 'unity of our country is non-negotiable and we should never be afraid to embrace dialogue and strengthen the basis of this most cherished union, a strong nation, not that which shies away from those difficult questions of its existence but that which confronts such questions and together provide answers to them in a way that guarantees fairness, justice..'
