Next CBN Governor may come from the South West

Recent rumours suggest that President Jonathan, in a bid to harness support from the South-West and halt the increasing popularity of the opposition All Progressives Congress in that region and some parts of the North-East and North-West, is planning to appoint someone from the zone to as Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service or to take over from Sanusi as CBN Governor.

A source informed The PUNCH that a meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and his strategists was held to this effect in the Presidential Villa recently. This may go a long way to address the allegation that the South West has been marginalized under the Jonathan administration.

Former Minister of Transport and Aviation, Chief Ebenezer Babatope, has however reacted differently to the allegation of marginalization by the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan. He said, “We the elders of the zone are not resting and I know that very soon, the President would do something about it.

“The position of CBN governor is still open and that of the CG of Customs is there. However, we must blame the former Governor of Lagos State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, for colluding with some members of the PDP in the House of Representatives to deny the South-West of the position of the Speaker.”
