Jonathan promises improved security

President Jonathan last night answered questions from a panel of journalists at the Presidential Media Chat organised to mark the nation's centenary celebrations. He spoke on a wide range of issues related to governance and policy implementation. One key area the president had to speak one was on the security situation in the country.

As journalists sought the opinion of the President on the security challenges faced in the North Eastern part of the country, and his reaction to recent comments by the Borno State Governor that the insurgents are better armed and better motivated than the Nigerian army.

The President stated that 'there are successes but nobody talks about them.' He described the Governor's comments as unfortunate noting that 'if he thinks that what he said is true, then I will pull out the military in Borno State for just one month and let's see if he will be able to go to that his government house; the Governor should be mindful about what he says'.
President Jonathan promised that he will fight back to take over the state. He also disclosed that the government was working with the Cameroonian authorities to tackle the insurgents. He noted that it was difficult negotiating with the group because they are faceless and their link with other terror organisations changes their orientation. They get brainwashed with 'extremely false religious teachings that have no basis in any religious books'.

On the the suspension of the CBN Governor, Sanusi Lamido, the President maintained he has the power to suspend the governor noting that he has oversight functions over the apex bank and that many actions by the bank are subject to the President's approval.
