Spainish Princess summoned for alleged involvement in corruption scandal

Spainish Princess Cristina has appeared in court after allegations of a corruption scandal linked to her husband's business. This is the first time in history that a member of the Spainish royal family will make an appearance in court as the subject of a criminal investigation. Inaki Urdangarin, the Princess's husband, is being investigated for tax fraud and money laundering.

The princess and her husband have dismissed the allegations as false.

Inaki Urdangarin, the princess’s husband, is alleged to have defrauded regional governments by organising events at highly inflated prices. The princess and her husband are also suspected to have spent some of the money on personal expenses.

Dozens of anti-monarchy protesters gathered around the court today for the historic judicial hearing. They chanted against the Spanish royalty. “Royal blood, unreal justice,” and “Out, out, the Spanish crown.” The King's youngest daughter will answer questions from a judge in a closed-door hearing.

As a result of the scandal, the reputation and credibility of Spain’s royal household have been put to question in recent years, making the King, Juan Carlos's popularity dwindle.
