Supreme Court Upholds Amaechi’s Election

The Supreme Court of Nigeria yesterday declared that Governor Amaechi remained the validly elected governor of Rivers State after it dismissed the suit filed by former governor Celestine Omehia seeking to nullify the emergence of Amaechi as the governor of the state.
In delivering judgment on the suit, a five man panel of the apex court referred to the suit filed by Omehia as lacking in merit and an abuse of court process.

Reacting to the judgement, Governor Amaechi said that there is no victor, no vanquished in the matter.

A statement by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. David Iyofor, described the judgement as a sign that God was with his administration and supporters. The Governor promised to work tirelessly in order to better the lives of the people.

“Today’s judgment once again shows that God is with us. As God has given us the opportunity to oversee the affairs of Rivers State, we will continue to do so diligently and tirelessly to better the lives of our people and develop the state.

“We will rededicate and focus more on administering good governance to the people of the state and ensure that our people continue to enjoy the dividends of democracy,” the statement read.

The Governor also hailed the apex court for its handling of the case and expressed gratitude the support given to him by the people.
