Ahead of the 2015 general elections, the Catholic Archbishop of Abuja, His Eminence, John Cardinal Onaiyekan has called on politicians to be cautious so as not to let their political ambitions destabilize the peace and stability of the country.
Onaiyekan who spoke at a press conference as part of activities to mark his 70th birthday in Abuja said that we do not need a prophet to tell us that if we continue the unhealthy practices that have characterized our existence the nation will be thrown into chaos. He said this in reaction to previous predictions that Nigeria will disintegrate in 2015 noting that if we don't get our act together that will naturally happen.
The cleric further stated that "since we know what it is that destroys a nation, it is up to us to decide whether we want to take that path or whether we want to take the path of good common sense”
In order to solve some of the economic problems facing the nation, Onaiyekan also said that “governments at all levels should partner with the church to address management deficits in key sectors as health, education and other social services where the church has comparative advantage.’’
The Catholic Archbishop also lauded the Federal Government for the recent same sex prohibition bill which was signed into law in spite of the criticisms faced from some sections of the international community.
“We have every right to order our social life in any way we think it should go. Our social life should not be organised on the basis of what others think.
“On this note, I commend our National Assembly and Mr President for resisting all the pressures and enacting a law against homosexuality,’’ Onaiyekan said.
“Signing the bill into law by President Jonathan in spite of pressures from within and outside the country should be commended by all and sundry.’’
Noting that all the religions in Nigeria including the African tradition forbade homosexuality, Onaiyekan also frowned at proponents of homosexuality with their evil beliefs.
The world is at crossroads and there is nothing new under the sun. `We all know that this is not the first time we have heard about the agitation for gay rights but our position, as a church, has not changed.
Even when some sections of society view same sex issues as moral disorder acts, homosexuality has not stopped, it still happens in the open around the world. It doesn’t mean that it should be accepted.
The position of the Catholic Church has always been clear that the designs of God are very clear to us. God created man; male and female He created them and told them to go and multiply and the church has stood by that natural plan of God.
As a catholic, obviously I am against homosexuality therefore against same-sex marriage. My position all along has been that strictly speaking there is no such thing as same-sex marriage because marriage by definition is between a man and a woman. Anything else, you can call it whatever you like. Don’t call it marriage because marriage is between a husband and a wife.
