French President François Hollande has confirmed his separation from first lady Valérie Trierweiler. This decision comes two weeks after media reports that Hollande was having an affair with French actress Julie Gayet.
"I wish to make it known that I have ended my partnership with Valérie Trierweiler,"
Hollande who previously said he wanted 'private matters to be dealt with privately' also added that he was speaking as a private individual and not from his capacity as president.
Although the two are not married, Valerie Trierweiler assumed the role of first lady at official functions following Hollande's election in May 2012.
