New York to allow medical use of marijuana
New York is set to join neighbouring states like Connecticut, Vermont and New Jersey in giving legal backing to the use of marijuana for seriously ill patients. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has dicided to use his administrative powers rather than legislative action to allow a limited number of hospitals to dispense marijuana for certain ailments. The plan will be formally unveiled in his state of the state speech this week.
Officials of the government have also pointed out that the medical marijuana policy will be more restrictive than in states like Colorado and California and subject to New York Health Department standards.
The New York state director for the Drug Policy Alliance, Gabriel Sayegh, has expressed delight for the "exciting" initial step taken by the government saying that it too will push for broader medical marijuana laws in the state.
