Corruption: Oba of Lagos accuses Obasanjo of hypocrisy

The Oba of Lagos, Oba Rilwan Akiolu has criticised former President, Olusegun Obasanjo for not practising what he now preaches while he occupied the presidency. At an event in Lagos for the presentation of the autobiography of the pioneer Chiariman of Nigeria's anti graft agency, ICPC, Obasanjo who chaired the occasion had lashed out at the Jonathan-led administration and the legislature for massive corruption and failure to improve the well-being of the citizenry.

Reacting to the Obasanjo's speech, Oba Akiolu accused the former leader of attempting to exhonerate himself from the corrupt practices that have bedivilled the nation over the years.

The monarch noted that while Obasanjo was President, he unjustly withheld the Local Government funds for Lagos State and was not transparent in his handling of crude oil revenue, an offence he now accuses his successor of.

In defence, Obasanjo stated that his duty as President was to uphold the provisions of the constitution which Lagos State failed to comply with and so he had to stand his ground.

“The question of my friendship with Lagos does not arise. As the president of the country, I must uphold the constitution and what is right. Lagos broke the constitution as far as its local government creation was concerned and I was only doing my work the way I
know how to do it and I have no apology,” he said.
