Bafana Bafana of South Africa today held the Super Eagles of Nigeria in a 2-2 draw at the Akwa Ibom International Stadium. The visitors went ahead late on in the first half and doubled the lead early in the second 45 minutes. Nigeria pulled one back minutes later before South Africa were reduced to ten men.
Despite the numerical advantage, the Super Eagles were unable to break threw South Africa's defence but managed to draw level late on in additional time. A draw was not what they needed and this was evident on the faces of the players and fans alike.
The result means the defending champions will not be defending their title in Equatorial Guinea next year because Congo were able to get three points against Sudan, placing them two points above Nigeria and second on the log.
Stephen Keshi's men also missed out on qualification as best losers after DR Congo secured a 3-1 victory over Sierra Leone in their final match to end with a better performance than the Super Eagles. Either of DR Congo or Egypt will go through as the best third place team. Nigeria will now have to go back to the drawing board to plan for the future. Meanwhile the future of Stephen Keshi remains uncertain.
