Tribunal Upholds Aregbesola’s Victory

The Election Tribunal sitting in Osun State on Friday upheld the victory of the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, Governor Rauf Aregbesola in the August 2014 governorship election.

According to the results earlier announced by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Aregbesola emerged victorious after polling 392, 284 votes to defeat Iyiola Omisore of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) who got 292, 742 votes, and 18 others. The PDP and Mr. Omisore then approached the tribunal to seek redress.

But on Friday, the Chairman of the tribunal panel, Justice Elizabeth Ikpejime, ruled that the petitioner failed to prove allegations was marred by irregularities in all the 17 local governments where the elections were conducted. Consequently, the tribunal declared Rauf Aregbesola and the APC as true winners at the polls.

The PDP has said it will appeal the decision.
