INEC meets with political parties over election date
The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is presently holding a meeting with representatives of all registered political parties across the country. This is coming days after the Council of State asked the electoral umpire to consult all relevant stakeholders before making a final decision on whether or not the election should be postponed to a later date.
All concerned parties are in an anxious wait to know the outcome of the meeting. The Commission's boss, Prof. Attahiru Jega is expected to address the press any moment from now.
With only a week left before the presidential election, many have expressed concern that some eligible voters yet to receive their Permanent Voters Card will be unfairly disenfranchised. There are also concerns that people in territories under the control of Boko Haram insurgents will not be able to participate in the exercise. The leading opposition party, APC, has however dismissed these noting that any attempt to shift the election will not be accepted.
