Uduaghan orders clean up of Warri

The city of Warri in Delta State is undergoing a massive clean up after the state governor, Dr. Emmanuel Uduaghan issued a directive to some members of his cabinet to go round the city and ensure that places illegally used as refuse dumps are cleared. Addressing journalists in Warri, the state Commissioner for Information, Mr. Chike Ogeah, disclosed that they were ordered by the governor to supervise the thorough sanitization of Warri, Uvwie and Udu Council Areas within one week.

Mr. Chike Ogeah said; “We have about 6 commissioners involved in this project. We have all moved down to Warri. This is going to be a day and night stuff. They have heard it from the horse’s mouth, the Deputy Governor just told them that they should remove all the illegal structures from the road, otherwise there are going to face penalties"

Governor Uduaghan according to reports, was particularly unhappy that the newly-rehabilitated Enerhen Junction was gradually turning into a refuse dump while Ugbuwangwe Junction on the NPA Expressway had been converted to an illegal market.

Many roadside traders were not spared as they watched their shops and goods being cleared away by bulldozers. They were reportedly given prior notice to vacate their illegal structures but refused to obey the directive.

The state Deputy Governor, Prof. Amos Utuama, who led the 25-man special sanitation team, warned that “anybody who is erecting illegal structure of any description or dumping refuse” should desist from such acts “otherwise they will end up in jail.” Utuama also disclosed that the Delta State Waste Management Board would be strengthened to ensure that the gains made during the period did not go down the drain.
