Pope Francis today canonized two of his predecessors, John XXIII and John Paul II, in a colourful ceremony that attracted thousands of pilgrims from around the world.
The historic event - the first dual canonization of former popes - was attended by Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI who resigned last year citing health reasons.
The installation of both great men as saints was greeted with cheers by the huge crowds that gathered in St. Peter's Square, Vatican City.
Pope Francis described them as "men of courage" who bore witness to God's mercy.
"They were priests, bishops and popes of the 20th century," the Pontiff said. "They lived through the tragic events of that century, but they were not overwhelmed by them. For them, God was more powerful, faith was more powerful."
