Reps move to amend WAEC law

The House of Representatives are in the process of amending the West African Examination Council (WAEC) Act of 2004 as a bill seeking to provide stiffer penalties for examination malpractice passed its second reading on Thursday.

Some of the lawmakers who commented on the bill noted that the move was necessary in order to check the high rate of examination malpractice. They frowned at the issue of impersonation during the conduct of the examinations and called for an increase in the current fine of N2000 for such offences to N200,000.

The House Majority Leader, Akande-Adeola who led the debate, noted that “because of the high incidence of examination malpractice, the Council thought it fit to amend the whole of Section 19 of the Principal Act, providing the offences constituting such malpractice to include illegal possession of examination papers.

“Having fore-knowledge of the contents of an examination paper or making use of an examination paper or the content of it in any manner whatsoever without lawful authority.”
