“Perfect fit”: LA Galaxy confirm summer move for Gerrard
Major League Soccer side, Los Angeles Galaxy, have confirmed an the potential signing of former England Captain, Steven Gerrard in an 18-month deal worth around £4m a year. The legendary Liverpool FC skipper announced his decision to leave his childhood club at the end of the English Premier League season in July earlier this week, putting an end to his twenty-five year stay at the club.
Gerrard has been instrumental to the Merseyside club’s success over the years. He has enjoyed a trophy-laden career with the English club and inspired his team to a memorable come back victory over AC Milan at the 2003 UEFA Champions League final in Istanbul.
LA Galaxy's, Bruce Arena, boss has expressed delight over the potential move. He said “Steven Gerrard arrives in July and by then we will certainly have a plan available. He’s a player of quality. I’m not concerned about how he’s going to fit in. We have a club with a proven history of success. All those things go hand in hand in making LA Galaxy a very attractive team for players such as Steven Gerrard.”
Gerrard said: “The time’s right for myself and my family for the change, for the fresh challenge,” he told the LA Times. “I want to finish my career very strong. I want to add some more medals and trophies to my collection. So I think it’s a match made in heaven. One of the reasons why I chose LA Galaxy was because of the success they’ve had recentlybut also the plans for more success in the future.”
Meanwhile, Galaxy president, Chris Klein, also stated that “We just started thinking in the universe of players that are out there, we want to make a decision on what signifies a Galaxy-designated player." Klein went on to describe the prolific midfielder as "the perfect fit' for the club with what he brings to us on the field and the character that he has off it.”
