Nigeria's electoral umpire, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), has disqualified seven candidates of different political parties in different states from contesting the February 28th gubernatorial election. The parties affected include: the Peoples Party of Nigeria, PPN (Delta State), Labour Party (Niger State), New Nigeria Peoples Party (Ogun), Unity Party of Nigeria (Oyo), United Democratic Party (Rivers), Peoples Democratic Movement, PDM (Sokoto and Zamfara),
According to the Commission, the listed candidates failed to comply with section 187 of the 2011 electoral act as amended, which stipulates that a candidate cannot be considered validly nominated to contest for an office unless he provides any person as his/her running mate in the election.
