Balon d'Or 2014: And the Winner is Cristiano Ronaldo
Real Madrid playmaker, Cristiano Ronaldo, has won the prestigious Ballon d'Or award for the second time in a row. The Portuguese Captain saw of competition from Barcelona's Lionel Messi and Bayern Munich's shot stopper, Manuel Neuer.
The 29-year-old has now won the award three times in his career, after also winning it in 2008 and 2013.
CR7 got 37.66 percent of the votes, while Messi edged Neuer, 15.76 to 15.72 percent to settle for second position. Arsenal and France legend, Thierry Henry, was the man who made the announcement ending the anxious wait.
"I would like to thank all of those who voted for me," the Real Madrid star said, stating further that "It has been an incredible year. I would like to continue the work that I have done so far. I want to try to improve, to become better as each day goes by.
"I never thought that I would bring this trophy back home on three occasions. I want to become one of the greatest players of all time. Of course, this requires a lot of effort and I hope to get there."
The Portuguese netted 61 goals last year for club and country and scored a record 17 goals in last season's UEFA Champions League, helping his team to clinch La Decima, their 10th Champions League trophy.
Ronaldo has scored 26 goals in 16 games in La Liga in addition to five more goals in six Champions League games this season.
In other awards, Germany's World-Cup-winning coach, Joachim Leow, beat Real Madrid's Carlo Ancelotti and Atletico Madrid's Diego Simeone to win the Coach of the Year award.
