Lagos 2015: Agbaje, Ambode sign peace pact


The two major candidates for the 2015 Lagos State governorship election: Akinwunmi Ambode of the All Progressives Congress (APC), and Jimi Agbaje of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP); signed a peace pact on Monday pledging their commitment to non-violence before, during and after the elections.


Both leaders signed the pledge at the official residence of the United States Consul-General in Lagos, Jeffrey Hawkins. The ceremony was witnessed by the U.S. Ambassador to Nigeria, James Entwistle and some religious leaders including the Catholic Archbishop of the Metropolitan See of Lagos, Most Revd. Dr. Alfred Adewale Martins, and Imam Abdulrahman Ahmadamong others.

Ambode and Agbaje promised to abide by the pact and respect the democratic process. Both candidates said they will accept the outcome of the election and seek redress through the legitimate channels in the event of any perceived injustice.

The US Ambassador to Nigeria on his part said “The greatest supporter of the US in this electioneering process is the Nigerian people and we are committed to seeing non-violent elections take place in Nigeria.”
