Prison Break in Ado-Ekiti

About 300 out of 400 inmates are now at large after unknown gunmen attacked a prison in Ado-Ekiti, the Ekiti State capital at about 10:15 am on Sunday. The attackers reportedly used dynamites to break the main entrance to the prison before gaining access to the facility.

Nweke Jr. declares for Senate

The Nigerian Government has revealed its decision to cancel a United States military training for its Army following the US's refusal to sell military helicopters and weapons for use in the war against terror. The US turned down Nigeria's request for the helicopter over concerns about Nigeria's ability to use the aircraft without inflicting harm on innocent civilians during their operations.

Bomb explosions rock Damaturu and Maiduguri

Boko Haram insurgents have struck again in two North Eastern Nigerian towns of Damaturu and Maiduguri Nigeria.

Damaturu, the capital of Yobe State, witnessed sporadic gunshots as the terrorists seized and attempted to gain control of the town in the early hours of Monday.

A former Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Olugbenga Ashiru, has died in a South African hospital were he was receiving treatment for a brain related illness.

Former Egyptian leader, Hosni Mubarak, may be freed soon after a lengthy spell behind bars. This is coming after a court in Egypt exhonerated him of murder (of protesters) charges against him while in office.

Air mishap in Ilorin

An aircraft carrying about 59 passengers crash landed today in Ilorin, Kwara State. The aircraft reportedly ran into a dish in the runway instead of heading for the tarmac.

Authorities have launched an investigation to ascertain what lead to the incident.

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Hon. Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, has filed an application exparte requesting the court to order the arrest of the Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba for disregarding the order by the court to maintain status quo in his legal suit against the police.

Supreme Court strikes out CPC's appeal against Wada's election

Nigeria's apex court has struck out an appeal by the defunct Congress for Progressive Change (CPC) challenging the election of Kogi State Governor, Idris Wada.

The court held that CPC lost its right to to carry out any legal action including filing an appeal following its merger with other political parties to become the All Progressives Congress.

More than 36 people die after bomb explosion in Kano

It was another bloodbath today in the ancient city of Kano, North West, Nigeria after two vehicles loaded with bombs exploded near the Central Mosque. No fewer than 36 people lost their lives and more than 100 people were injured following the ugly incident.

Diezani Madueke elected President of OPEC

Nigeria's Minister for Petroleum, Diezani Allison-Madueke today made history after she was elected the first female President of the Oraganization of Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

At a General Meeting of the body held in Vienna, Austria on Thursday, the organization confirmed that Mrs. Alison-Madueke will take over from Abdourhman Atahar Al-Ahirish, Libya's Vice Prime Minister for Corporation. She is to occupy the position for a year.

Senate condemn police invasion of National Assembly

The Senate has condemned the recent invasion of the National Assembly complex by the police, accusing the law enforcement agency of compromising the sanctity and integrity of parliament.

Taking turns to speak, some of the senators expressed discontent over the 'unconstitutional, criminal and illegal' act of the police as they engaged lawmakers in a 'show of force'.

PDP clears Jonathan, Balewa to run.

The PDP today screened two candidates, President Goodluck Jonathan, and a son of Nigeria's former Prime Minister, Tafawa-Balewa to contest the party's primaries and seek for the highest office in the land.

Balewa later informed the screening committee headed by Ahmadu Ali of his decision to withdraw from the race, leaving President Jonathan as the only candidate. Balewa informed journalists that he remains committed to the course of the PDP.

Obasanjo lashes out at Jonathan again, condemns corrupt National Assembly

These were the words of former President, Olusegun Obasanjo at the presentation of an autobiography of Justice Mustapha Akanbi, pioneer Chairman of Nigeria's anti graft agency, ICPC.

Obasanjo criticised the administration of President Jonathan for failing to address the rampant corruption and unemployment in the country noting that 'the often quoted GDP growth neither reflects on the living conditions of most of our people nor on most of the indigenous industries'.

Bloodshed in Maiduguri as 2 Female Suicide bombers blow up market

It was another sad day in Maiduguri, North East Nigeria as two female suicide bombers detonated explosive devices in a popular market around 11:30am.

One of the girls walked into the crowded market and blew herself up killing three people. After sympathizers had gathered the scene of the explosion, the second girl screamed and detonated the device under her garment killing 30 more people.

Taraba Speaker resigns
