APC and PDP lawmakers jostle for House Speaker job

A Professor of Law and Political Science, Mojeed Alabi, has joined the league of members of the House of Representatives, warming up to contest the leadership of the green chamber during the inauguration of the eighth National Assembly in June.

The lawmaker, a first-time member in the lower chamber, was former Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, from Ede North/Ede South/Egbedore and Ejigbo Federal Constituency.

He will be contesting the seat with members such as Femi Gbajabiamila, Abdulmumin Jibrin, Yakubu Dogara, Israel Famurewa, Pally Iriase, Leo Ogor and Muhammad Monguno, who had already indicated their interests in the position.

Alabi, Gbajabiala, and Famurewa are from the South-West; Jibrin, (North-West); Dogara and Monguno from North-East; Iriase is from the South-South; while Ogor, who is the only member of the Peoples Democratic Party among the contestants, is from the South-East geo-political zone.

The professor with legislative experience in the Osun State parliament, told our correspondent on Thursday that he would have an edge over the others, “when the chips are down.”

He noted that while the other contestants relied on the strength of being ranking members of the House, his legislative knowledge both in practical and theoretical terms, would work in his favour.

The lawmaker, who was the Secretary of Ejigbo Local Government of Osun State in February 1991, said those who believed in his ability to effectively hold the position, had set up contact teams across the six geo-political zones for the actualisation of his dream.
