The governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Akinwunmi Ambode, has been declared the winner of the April 11 election. Mr Ambode polled 811,994 votes, with the runner-up and the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr Jimi Agbaje, polling 659,788 votes.
Analysts said it was a keenly contested election between the candidate of the party ruling the state, the APC and the PDP candidate.
Announcing the results on Sunday, the returning officer of the Independent National Electoral Commission in Lagos State, Professor Isaac Folorunso Adewole, declared that “Ambode Akinwunmi of the APC, having satisfied the requirement of the law, securing at least 25 per cent of votes in all local governments and scoring the highest votes is hereby declared the winner and his is returned elected”.
After the election results were announced, Mr Agbaje congratulated Mr Ambode in a telephone call.
In a tweet on his twitter handle, Mr Agbaje said: “I wish him well and pray he will be successful in guiding this state”.
He further told Channels Television that he was happy with the outcome of the election.
“We ran a race. There will be winners and there will be losers. As good sportsmen, we accept it as true leaders. That is the only way to go.
“Having accepted it, if we do feel cheated and that there are substantial issues to be raised, then we will follow due process. That is how it should be. But definitely, violence, abuse and all will not be an issue,” Mr Agbaje said.
The PDP governorship candidate further said that he would not run for the governorship in further elections.
