After so many entertaining matches that provided shock and excitement to football fans all over the world, the group stage of the FIFA world cup has finally ended.
Among the major surprises, defending champions, Spain have failed to progress to the last 16 after beginning their campaign with a humiliating 5-1 defeat to last tournament's co-finalists Netherlands, as well as a 2-0 defeat against Chile.
Other big teams that failed to progress include: Italy, England, Portugal, Ivory Coast and Ghana. Only two African teams: Nigeria and Algeria survived the first phase of the tournament.
