50 people feared dead after boat mishap in Nigeria

About 50 persons were feared dead in a Boxing Day boat tragedy at River Buruku when the wooden boat conveying them across the river capsized at the middle of the river.
According to an eyewitness, the victims of the mishap were young fun seekers; “They met their untimely death while returning from a picnic on the other side of the river.


“When they arrived the boarding point at about 8pm yesterday, most of them were drunk, they boarded the canoe and jam packed themselves in the wooden boat against the advise of everyone including the driver that conveyed them.

“Unfortunately, the canoe could not make it to the other side of the river, it capsized at the middle of the river; as I speak to you, bodies of most of the victims are yet to be recovered from the river,” the eyewitness said.

No fewer than 15 corpses have been recovered. As at yesterday, the bank of River Buruku was crowded with family members and associates of the victims who went in search of their loved ones.
The development halted all commercial activities on the river bank. Benue Police Public Relations Officer, Daniel Ezeala, said: "Fifteen dead bodies have been recovered so far by the search party and they are still searching for other missing persons." According to Ezeala, the recovered bodies were found by men of the Boat Operators and Hirers Association at Buruku where the incident took place.

Meanwhile, family members of the victims have continued to lament the loss of their loved ones following the boat mishap. They appealed to the government to intervene in the rescue and recovery operations.
